UN and EU - 80 years of the UN

This year marks the 80th anniversary of the United Nations.

Coincidently, last week BRUMUN took place at the European Parliament with 200 students from our school as well as the 3 other Brussels European schools and the newly accredited school of Argenteuil. A UN simulation aside from being a wonderful way to develop learning and skills is an opportunity to build multiples bridges: between students and schools, between topics and between the school and the professional world.

This week we had the pleasure to host Sherri Aldis Director of the UN Regional Information Centre for Western Europe (UNRIC) in Brussels for a presentation of the UN work and a discussion with our students. BRUMUN participants attended but also student of Mrs Caels, Mrs Karantinaki and Mr Brecht VAN DEN BOSSCHE. Mr Caels is currently working on the topic of  political philosophy with her S7 class and our English teachers use it as topic for their L2 L3 classes. Other links with classes are possible, such as, as suggested by the French teacher Mrs Lalanne, the possiblity for future editions to involve L2 French learners in writing articles in French during the sessions.

The bridge with the real world is clearly in the students mind, one of the first question from one of our students concerned the relationships between the UN and the EU institution, a fascinating and complex question that makes a lot of sense in the current international context.

Students were also interested in career possibilities and learned about the Youth delegate programme that allows young people from every country to participate actively to the UN by sitting at the General Assembly in New York every year
