Presentation by a film producer during S7 theatre class
As part of Ms Silvana Cigognini and Ms Sarah Netens' theatre class, S7 students had the opportunity to attend a talk by a film producer. Mr Bruno Cristaldi came to share his experience and present the many facets of his profession, which takes him to the Cannes, Venice, Berlin and Turin film festivals, among many others. This enriching encounter gave students a better understanding of what goes on behind the scenes in filmmaking, beyond acting and directing.
The producer began by explaining his central role in the creation and development of a film. Often misunderstood by the general public, the job of a producer involves supporting a project from its initial concept to its release, coordinating not only the artistic aspects but also the financial and organisational aspects. He emphasised the importance of a producer having a global vision, while also knowing how to surround himself with competent professionals.
A large part of the presentation was devoted to film financing. The students learned that setting up a film project requires a complex balance between subsidies, public aid, private investment and, in some cases, international co-productions. The producer explained the different stages of seeking financing, putting together solid applications and the need to convince partners to believe in an artistic project.
The presentation also highlighted the differences between the European film system and the American model. While European cinema relies heavily on public support and a more artistic or auteur approach, the American system operates mainly on private investment and a profit-driven model.
The producer then discussed the possible paths to a career in film production. He emphasised the importance of training, practical experience and professional networking. According to him, curiosity, perseverance and the ability to work in a team are essential qualities for success in this demanding environment.
Finally, the students discovered the many professions that revolve around a producer: production assistants, production managers, distribution managers, financial managers, talent agents, etc. This presentation showed that cinema is above all a collective endeavour, bringing together a variety of skills in the service of a common project.
This talk gave the S7 students a concrete and enlightening insight into the world of cinema and its professional realities. By linking the theatre course to the audiovisual sector, it broadened their understanding of artistic and cultural professions, while sparking curiosity and reflection on possible career paths after their studies. It was an inspiring encounter that enriched their approach to theatre and cinema, showing them that behind every film lies exciting and complex teamwork.
